Case Study

Problem: 4 year large scale construction project utilizing 3,000 – 7,000 construction workers in high security area.  Potential liability and lost productivity costs resulting from injuries and illnesses at the worksite (2005 – 2008)

Solution: Full time onsite clinic staffed with Nurse Practitioner and Medical Assistant, coupled with Medical Director oversight.  Services included:

  1. Demand management (urgent care / first aid / emergency stabilization – 600 visits / year)
  2. Primary Care (ailments and illnesses non work related, dispensing over the counter medications)
  3. Targeted injury risk reduction programs (partnership w/ OCIP Safety Team)
  4. Physical and occupational therapy (200 visits / year)
  5. Case Management
  6. Drug Testing (pre-employment and random testing – 2,500 tests / year)
  7. Referral / Specialty Network Management

Outcome: Annual hard dollar savings of $700,000 – equivalent to nearly 3x the annual operating cost of the onsite clinic.  Cost savings included:

  1. Avoided costly and time consuming visits to urgent care clinics and ER
  2. Lost productivity savings from lost work time with off-site care
  3. Less costly specialty care through high value network – avoiding unnecessary procedures
