The History of Pride Month

Pride Month is observed each June as a time to recognize, celebrate, and honor the history, resilience, and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority communities. The month highlights support for LGBTQ+ rights, inclusive policies, and culture. Traditionally, many communities host parades, festivals, memorials, and educational events to both commemorate progress and acknowledge ongoing challenges. Pride Month represents a balance of political advocacy, community visibility, and celebration.

The Origins of Pride: The Stonewall Riots

Pride Month traces its origins to the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in 1969. When New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn and forcibly removed patrons and employees, community members resisted. A growing crowd gathered and continued to protest over six days, catalyzing a modern movement for LGBTQ+ civil rights and equality.

From Protest to Parade

One year later, on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, activists in New York City marched through Manhattan to advocate for gay pride and visibility. That event, recognized as the first Gay Pride Parade, established a model for annual Pride marches that now take place around the world every June.

National Recognition and Global Growth

Over the years, Pride celebrations have expanded from major metropolitan areas to midsize cities and smaller communities worldwide. In June 2000, President Bill Clinton officially designated June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in recognition of the Stonewall riots and subsequent activism. In 2009, President Barack Obama adopted the more inclusive term “LGBT Pride Month” and further honored the origins of Pride by establishing the Stonewall National Monument encompassing the Stonewall Inn and its surrounding area.
